Murals & Public Art

Fort Collins is a city where art awaits around every corner — thanks to a deep community commitment to the arts, vibrant installations and projects are woven throughout its streets and alleyways, free for everyone to enjoy

Art in Public Places

The City of Fort Collins established the Art in Public Places program in 1995 to integrate art into our community through acquisitions and maintenance of public art. Popular projects like Pianos About Town, Transformer Cabinet Murals, and Pedestrian Sidewalk Pavers bring art to life throughout Fort Collins. Plan a self-guided tour of the city through their interactive map to find all public art around town here. Follow along on their Instagram channel (@focoart).

Pianos About Town

The Art in Public Places program, Bohemian Foundation and the Downtown Development Authority all partner to keep the art and music flowing through Pianos About Town. Each year, about a dozen artists paint pianos from May through October in Old Town Square, where community members and visitors can interact with the artists as they work. The completed pianos are then placed throughout town in public spaces for budding and seasoned musicians to play.

Transformer Cabinet Murals & Pedestrian Pavers

Cabinet Murals and flowers in Downtown Fort Collins

The City founded the Transformer Cabinet Mural project in 2004 as a graffiti prevention program. Murals help lower maintenance costs while adding bright colorful art in unexpected places. The program keeps the investment in our community by using local artists and non-profit groups to paint the cabinets. Since the start of the program, more than 450 transformer cabinets have become works of art.

Art at every step, literally! Since 2002, the Pedestrian Paver project has worked to incorporate granite pavers with drawings by Fort Collins youth into City sidewalks. With approximately 15 drawings selected each year, there has been over 200 pedestrian pavers installed across the city.

Downtown Development Authority

First Friday Art Walk

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) presents Downtown Fort Collins First Friday Art Walk™ every first Friday of the Month from 6-9 pm. The event is a free, self-guided walking tour to various businesses to celebrate creativity, culture, and community in the heart of the city. From fine art to funky and eclectic styles, Art Walk showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions designed to entertain and engage art lovers and casual participants of all ages and backgrounds.

Sculptures in the Square

Each year, Old Town Square gets a fresh look thanks to the DDA's Sculptures in the Square — a loan program that embraces art as part of everyday life and promotes downtown Fort Collins as an arts destination.

Don't miss some of our larger public art pieces — our murals. These murals are the result of efforts by several organizations: Fort Collins Mural Project, Art in Public Places, the Downtown Development Authority, and independent artists. Between them all, there are over 100 murals in our community!

Fort Collins Mural Project

Fort Collins Mural Project is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering local emerging artists, beautifying the city of Fort Collins, and building community through art. In 2025, they celebrated their 10th year and their 100th mural! Check out their interactive mural map on the FCMP website so you don't miss out on any of Fort Collins' murals.

Fort Collins Gateway Mural

One of the most recognizable murals by FCMP is the Fort Collins Gateway Mural, located in Downtown Fort Collins and completed in 2024. It serves as a testament to the heart and soul of the city, showcasing its landmarks, history, and lifestyle in a postcard style. Even the creation of the mural was a feat of collaboration — each letter in 'Fort Collins,' was completed by a different artist with a different theme — all tying back to the region.
